Annual Letter

45 YEARS “SAYING YES TO CHESS”

October 2013

Dear Chess Supporter:

This has been an exciting year for American chess and the U.S. Chess Trust.

Representing the Trust, I was delighted to take part in the opening ceremony of the SuperNationals which broke all attendance records in Nashville in April. On behalf of the Trust, I enjoyed inducting 3 outstanding American chessplayers to the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame in St. Louis. I inducted Alex Yermolinsky at the Museum in October and Gregory Kaidanov and the late Mona May Karff at the U.S. Championship opening ceremony in St. Louis in May. Members of the US Hall of Fame are nominated by the USCF Hall of Fame Committee and elected by the trustees of the Trust.

Managing Director Barbara DeMaro and I actively participated in both the opening and closing ceremonies of the Arnold Denker Tournament of High School Champions, the Dewain Barber Tournament of K-8th Grade Champions, and the first National Girls Invitational in Middleton, Wisconsin, in July. The Trust is pleased to support the Denker, the Barber and the Girls Invitational Tournament. This spring I visited a match between American prisoners in Cook County Jail in Chicago against prisoners in Russia, conducted via internet.

Every year the Trust helps American chess in many ways, including donating sets and boards to schools nationwide, assisting U.S. players and coaches in the World Youth Championship and the World Junior, and aiding the US Blind Championship and College chess. The Trust also donates $7500 in scholarships, divided among five students, based on academics and chess, with the aid of the National Scholastic Chess Foundation. We have aided chess in prisons and chess in the armed forces overseas. Include the Chess Trust in your will, so your legacy to chess will live on. You can also donate to the Trust in honor of a friend or relative. Check our website: www.uschesstrust.org. Our Combined Federal Campaign Number is 10212.

Our trustees represent all parts of the nation and serve without compensation.

We mourn the death of trustee Mitchell Denker and welcome Marshall Chess Club President Stuart Chagrin as our newest trustee Your donations are federally tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Contact Managing Director Barbara DeMaro at bduscf@aol.com. to include the Trust in your will.

Thanks for your help!
